Today I joined the amazing Rosie Price in her Facebook group Grit + Pearl, a group that’s changing the way women show up in their business and life.
We chatted about A LOT! Specifically, about how to show up stylishly in business and in life, hitting topics like:
Common fashion faux pas I see in my client’s closets
- For example, having lots of bohemian pieces because they gravitated towards them and their flowy-ness after having their kids even though it’s not their style.
- Ultimately, I notice that their closets are filled with the wrong pieces that don’t do them justice, their personality justice or send the right message for themselves. Which is where I come in, helping them to create a more representative and intentional wardrobe.
Wardrobe changes due to body and weight changes
- I shared that even though your shape and the functionality of your clothes might change your style will typically stay the same.
- This means you always want to focus on FIT and FUNCTION. Consider switching up the fabrics and silhouettes of your pieces so they function for your new found body or lifestyle but in the same colors and patterns you loved from before so you can stay true to you and your messaging.
- i.e. I now wear cotton tees and sweaters during the day when I’m taking care of my son versus wearing my dressier tops all day.
How to make shopping and finding pieces that fit easier
- Take your measurements and compare those to the piece’s dimensions online so you can weed out some before ordering.
- Shoulders
- Inseam
- Chest
- Waist
- Hips
- Don’t be afraid to take a TON of pieces into the dressing room! Bring multiple sizes and styles in with you and don’t be discouraged when you only walk out with a few. Between the industry and honing in on your style- this is completely normal.
How to find your fit
- Jeans- find some with a little stretch in them, consider buying them in a specific cut like curvy or modern, and then throw on a skinny belt so you never have to adjust your pants if they fall down again!
- Make sure your pieces skim your figure. They don’t need to be spray painted on but they don’t need to be baggy either they should flow along the outside of your body line.
How to make go-to outfits in your wardrobe
Have these must-have basics
- Dark Wash Jeans (skinny or straight leg)
- Pullover sweaters
- 25-30 tops (cotton if you’re more casual or polyester if you’re at an office and need to be dressier)
- Neutral cardigans or blazers (navy, black, white, gray, and a pop of color)
- Basic jewelry
- Long Gold and Long Silver Necklaces
- Statement Necklace
- Simple Gold and Simple Silver Necklaces
- Neutral Shoes
- Nude and Black Heel
- Nude and Black Flats
An Intentional Wardrobe vs. Capsule Wardrobe
- Capsule wardrobes can limit you to too few pieces that don’t provide all of the functionality that you need.
- If you have an intentional wardrobe instead, you’re being thoughtful with the pieces you’re adding and that they:
- Match your style
- You have enough to feel satisfied and not bored or out of looks
How to build your confidence through your clothes
- Fit- make sure it fits you right and is skimming your figure
- Focus on the right neckline, the right fit in pants and in the shoulders.
- Knowing your style= knowing your colors, patterns and types of pieces you need
- Knowing the activities and setting you’re walking into- it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed but know the “dress code” and your audience before you go somewhere.
