It’s winter! Time to transition your clothes to something a little cozier and hunker down for the winter months.
You may have noticed that you’re “getting over” the pieces you currently have and are craving something new and exciting. That’s where these winter trends come in and can be a real asset to your wardrobe.
Just remember: Even though it’s trending that doesn’t mean you have to wear it! Treat trends like a buffet: buy what you like and skip what you don’t.
To help freshen up your wardrobe here are the Top 8 Fashion Trends you can add into your closet this winter:
1. HOUNDSTOOTH
Classic, neutral, and always in style. What more could you ask for? Houndstooth is such a versatile pattern that is all over the racks this season, and rightfully so! You’ll see it in both large and small prints and in everything from pants to purses.
Pro Tip: Tone down this trend by buying it in a smaller print and layering over top of it. (Love the pattern but not sure how to accessorize? Check out my article on how to accessorize for work!)
2. SNAKESKIN
If you have an edgy style or like to push the boundaries then you have to try a snakeskin print this season! Animal prints are all the rage right now, but this one in particular is fabulous because it can be worn in so many different ways. You can try a subtle look in a black pair of snakeskin shoes or really go bold with a snakeskin printed shirt. Either way you’ll be styling!
Pro Tip: Snakeskin doesn’t have to be in a neutral, but if you do try it in a bold color, make sure it’s not too loud. You want to be on the chic side of things. (You might also find this video helpful: “How do I wear an animal print?“)
3. BUFFALO PLAID
The epitome of fall and winter, plaid is a staple that everyone can add into their closet. Buffalo plaid features thicker stripes and will be everywhere this season!
Pro Tip: Is your closet already filled with plaid flannels? Add this trend with something unexpected like the lining of your blazer or a cute pair of dress pants. Those can double for date night too! (Rocking a buffalo plaid scarf? Check out these 3 ways to tie a scarf!)
4. COLORBLOCK
From sweaters to layering to shoes- one of my favorite trends is back again! You’ll LOVE color blocking because it allows you to add a fun pop of color to a typically muted color palette. You can try a color blocked outfit within similar shades, or you can go for a high contrast look with neutrals and your favorite winter color.
Pro Tip: Don’t feel like you need to buy a whole new piece to get in on this trend- just take the solids you have and pair them together like the look above! (Looking for the perfect piece to colorblock? Check out this amazing versatile cardigan!)
5. JACQUARD
The name might sound fancy, but this whimsical texture can be used for any type of outfit. Jacquard is like an embossed fabric and you might see it in the same color of the fabric or with a brocade, metallic twist. Either way this floral style is great in skirts, coats, pants, dresses, and even casually in ponte or jersey tops!
Pro Tip: Not sure where to find a piece like this? Most retailers are selling them- simply type jacquard into the search bar and see all of your options!
6. BOUCLÉ
Boucle is like a cousin to tweed- just in a tighter knit. It combines different colors in a thicker thread and can be seen on anything from an athleisure sweatshirt to a workwear blouse. This trend is awesome because it gives you the look of a pattern without being too bold and has a thick, cozy texture!
Pro Tip: Try to find this trend in a top or a jacket so you can dress it up or dress it down and get more use out of it! (Love Patterns? Check out the Top Spring 2020 Trends for more outfit ideas!)
7. RESIN
Resin is about to become your new obsession! It’s a plastic jewelry with marbled colors, similar to tortoise shell. You’ll love this trend because each piece is completely unique and full of different colors. Consider this a chameleon for your wardrobe: pair the piece of jewelry with one color and you’ll see it come out of the resin pattern.
Pro Tip- If you like the look of resin but are worried that you’ll never wear it again-, go with the classic tortoise shell print. It never goes out of style! (Want to try the resin trend? Check out how I used it the segment “What To Wear On Valentine’s Day“)
8. LEOPARD
We saw it everywhere this fall and I’m happy to report: leopard print is here to stay! This print can span from classic to edgy, and for those who do want to try it, your options are endless. Jewelry, purses, shoes, jackets, tops, belts, pants- you name it, you’ll find it!
Pro Tip: If you have classic style, leopard in a top or pants might be a bit out of your comfort zone, but in shoes, it’s the perfect addition to your wardrobe. Leopard can add variety to your looks, keep you current, and allow you to play with pops of color. (Curious about your style? Take the What’s My Style quiz!)
